Bishops Claim County Sportshall Athletics Title

Bishops Primary School recently became the first Essex Primary Schools Sportshall Champions, beating seven other schools into first place at the county final which took place last Wednesday at the Clements Hall Leisure Complex in Hawkwell.

Bishops had already qualified through two rounds of competition: having won in the first round of competition, against other primary schools from the Springfield area, they then took part in the Chelmsford School Sports Partnership Final at Chelmsford Sport & Athletics Centre. The competition was extremely close and went right down to the wire. Bishops eventually beat Barnes Farm into first place and became the first Chelmsford Primary Schools Sportshall Champions, therefore earning the right to represent Chelmsford in the County Final.

Similar competitions to those taking place in Chelmsford have been going on across Essex throughout the winter and each of the schools present at last Wednesday’s county final were representing their respective Partnerships after also qualifying through their own partnership finals.

On the day Bishops totally dominated on the track – out of the 12 races, Bishops came 1st or 2nd in 9 of them. They were equally dominant in the field events with wins for the boys in the speed bounce and soft javelin and wins for the girls in the vertical jump. In the end Bishops won by a comfortable margin, which was an excellent reward for all their hard work. Equally important was that everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves and after enjoying their first taste of competitive athletics, they were already looking forward to the start of next year’s competition.
