The Norwich Union sports:hall Scottish Final took place at the DISC, Dundee on Saturday 24th February. Teams from nine local authorities participated in under-13 and under-15 girls and boys categories. All these teams had qualified from regional heats back in January.
The team that finished with the highest points score in each category will now compete with the qualifiers from the equivalent Welsh, Northern Irish and nine English events at the UK Final.
The under-13 boys team from Argyll and Bute, the under-13 girls team from South Lanarkshire, together with the under-15 boy’s from Perth and Kinross and the under-15 girl’s from North Lanarkshire will all travel south to the big event which takes place in Birmingham on Sunday 22nd April 2007.
The individuals with the highest individual point scores were Rachel Burns, North Lanarkshire, winning for the second year in a row, in the under-15 girl’s category and Iain MacDowall, Argyll & Bute in the under-15 boy’s category. Both athletes qualify as 'all-rounder’s in their own right.
Two Scottish under 13 records were set in this seasons championships with an impressive jump of 7.30m by Emma Dawson from Perth & Kinross in the triple jump and 83 bounces by John MacPhee from Argyll and Bute in the Speed bounce.
A special mention should be made for the Shetland Isles team. Due to the weather conditions the ferries were all cancelled. However with quick thinking by team manager Elaine Park they managed to book flights for the under-15 Girls team and for individual under-15 Boy Maurice Williamson. The girls finished 2nd overall with Maurice picking up 3rd individual.
This year the final was spiced up with the appearance of AAA Silver Medalist, 400m athlete, Gemma Nicol who handed out individual and team medals.
